Abstract

Distributing Local History Databases

Presenters: Walter Lewis, HALINET and Gail Richardson, SGL

Increasingly as special collections in a variety of libraries approach the question of digitization they are confronted with a variety of data types: metadata in a variety of structures; content in the form of text, images, video and sound. This presentation will address the HALINET (Halton Information Network) solutions that cover a wide range of Local Historical information including full-text community newspapers, census, surrogate court records, land records, photograph collections, back-of-book indexes, digital books and maps, archival finding aids, transcriptions, cemetery indexes, etc. The presentation will address name and subject searching across these databases (and multiple servers) using ODBC, SQL, Z39.50 and XML.

See also the HALINET Demonstration Page.
Session will include a discussion on the technology behind the following forms page: http://www.hhpl.on.ca/localhistory/forms.htm
